Finding Inspiration on the Oregon Coast

Visiting the Oregon Coast has always been at the top of my bucket list. The cooler weather, towering trees, dramatic coastline, and undeniable beauty had me dreaming of this place long before I ever got the chance to visit.

One thing I make a priority for myself each year is taking time to invest in my craft—whether that looks like attending a mentorship, going on a retreat, or simply stepping outside of my everyday environment to create and learn alongside other photographers.

For the last four years, I have primarily been a family photographer, with a little bit of weddings, elopements, and couples sprinkled in along the way. But over the last several months, I’ve felt myself naturally pivoting away from family sessions and stepping more confidently into the wedding world.

And honestly? It feels like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

I absolutely love documenting stories, especially love stories. There is something so special about capturing the little moments between two people—the way they look at each other, the way they move together, the laughter, the quiet moments, and all of the things that make their relationship uniquely theirs.

So, I figured… what better place to capture love than the Oregon Coast?

Six Couples, One Beautiful Retreat

Six beautiful couples, about ten attendees, and an unforgettable weekend on the coast.

I had the absolute best time documenting these couples and soaking in every bit of the experience. But before I share the stories from all six sessions, I have to start with my favorite session of the entire retreat.

We ended our retreat with two sunrise sessions: the first was a casual couples session, and the second was an elopement-inspired session.

Both couples were absolutely gorgeous, inside and out. Their connection felt genuine and effortless, which made documenting them feel the same.

And then there was the sunrise.

My First Sunrise Session

In four years of photographing professionally, I had somehow never photographed a sunrise session.

Well… I’m officially obsessed.

The soft morning light. The fog rolling through. The subtle pink tones peeking through the clouds. The warm, natural glow pouring through the windows.

There was something almost magical about it all.

The light felt soft and romantic without being overly dramatic. Everything was quiet and slow, and it created the perfect atmosphere for documenting connection in its most natural form.

And the casual couples session? By far, my favorite of the entire weekend.

The Beauty of Neutral Tones

One detail I really want to highlight is what this couple wore.

They chose beautiful, neutral tones, and in my opinion, that will always make photographs feel even more timeless.

Neutral colors allow the focus to remain on the couple while complementing the environment rather than competing with it. They also create beautiful, natural skin tones that blend effortlessly with the landscape.

Especially when you’re photographing somewhere as breathtaking as the Oregon Coast, you want the scenery to enhance the story—not overpower it.

And these two absolutely nailed it.

Your Love Should Never Feel Forced

One of my favorite things about photographing couples is creating images that feel like them.

Your love should never feel forced just because you’re in front of a camera.

I love directing my couples almost as if I’m capturing a video. Sometimes, I’m actually capturing video, haha. I want movement. I want laughter. I want the little in-between moments. I want you to interact with each other instead of worrying about whether you’re posing “correctly.”

Because when you’re comfortable, your connection comes through.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

You just need to love each other.

My job is to create the space for you to forget the camera is even there and to document your story as it naturally unfolds.

That’s what I want my couples to look back on years from now—the way they felt, not just the way they looked.

Leaving with More Than Pretty Photos

I came to the Oregon Coast hoping for inspiration.

I left with so much more.

I met incredibly talented photographers who challenged and inspired me. I met beautiful couples who were genuine, kind, and amazing at what they do. I stepped outside of my comfort zone, experimented creatively, and experienced a place that had been sitting on my bucket list for years.

Most importantly, I was reminded why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

It’s not just about pretty photos.

It’s about connection.

It’s about stories.

It’s about creating something that allows people to remember how a moment felt.

This retreat gave me fresh inspiration for the direction I’m headed in my photography business, but it also gave me confidence, new friendships, unforgettable memories, and an even deeper love for documenting couples and the stories they share.

And if this Oregon Coast experience taught me anything, it’s that I’m ready for more of it.
